Problems in defining and observing the chromospheres of stars, particularly late stars, are reviewed. Ways in which stellar chromospheres affect stellar spectra, continuum or line spectra, are discussed. H and K lines of ionized calcium, helium lines, ionized magnesium lines, the Balmer series, and the Ca II infrared triplet are examined as indicators of stellar chromospheres. Chromospheric activity is related to the position of stars, and particularly giants, dwarfs, and subgiants, on the HR diagram. Various attempts at construction of models of stellar chromospheres are reviewed.
