The IR Ca II triplet at 8498, 8542, 8662 A, relatively easy to observe and measure and free from atmospheric absorption bands, is a powerful tool for the study of the stellar populations in galaxies, provided it is possible to understand its behavior with the stellar parameters, such as effective temperature, surface gravity, and metal content. This paper presents the results of CCD spectroscopic observations for a sample of 86 stars covering a wide range in luminosity, effective temperature, and metallicity, in order to establish the dependence of the IR Ca II triplet on stellar atmosphere parameters. Previous results giving the main dependence on surface gravity are not confirmed. Instead, a biparametric dependence on metallicity and surface gravity is found, and no dependence on effective temperature.
