We present an analytical discussion of the problem of a steady gas flow through a gravitational potential well. Two types of solutions exist: a smooth isoentropic and a shocked one. An isoentropic solution exists for any amplitude of the well and is stable if the disturbances of the flow are less than a certain critical value. If the amplitude of the well is large enough, a zone inside of the well appears where the location of the shock wave is forbidden. In this case the shock wave is placed on the front with respect to the flow boundary of the forbidden zone. The location of the shock front on the rear boundary is unstable.
