We review the current status of the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) optical design. The recent adoption of a 25 meter2, eighteen mirror segment telescope architecture is discussed in the context of its expected scientific imaging performance and overall sensitivity. The decision to proceed with a beryllium primary mirror technology is also discussed in terms of the telescope's cryogenic performance. We discuss the expected scientific capabilities of the telescope in light of its current performance requirements. We also provide a status report on the development of key JWST observatory technologies.
