There are several first principles 3-D models of the ionosphere and thermosphere available. We briefly review some of the existing models, and identify some of the scientific unknowns that contribute to their lack of fidelity. These unknowns include model inputs, boundary conditions, parameterizations and aeronomy. Another problem for the global models is lack of data for validation. We discuss how new measurements could contribute to significant progress in ionosphere-thermosphere modeling.
