The paper examines a statistical model of the image of an extended object which is spatially invariant with respect to atmospheric distortions. This model along with the maximum likelihood method is used to synthesize algorithms for the optimal processing of short-exposure images. It is noted that the results obtained can be used in astronomical observations of the sun and planets as well as in connection with satellite observations of the earth surface.
