The problem of processing a single realization of an image of an astronomical object distorted by atmospheric turbulence is examined. Equations of maximum likelihood are obtained for a Gaussian model of the spatial spectrum of a spot image in cases of small and large signal-noise ratios. An analytical solution of this solution is used to synthesize an optimal-processing algorithm and to elucidate the physical meaning of this algorithm.
