Statistical simulation methods are used to show that the Oosterhoff effect can be explained by probability considerations without recourse of any physical mechanism. The distribution of the mean periods of the RR Lyrae stars in 43 globular clusters is simulated here using two methods. The resulting gaps and peaks demonstrate the stochastic origin of the Oosterhoff effect.
