The effect of a nonzero cosmological constant on gravitational lensing is examined. For high-redshift lens-quasar systems, the uncertainty associated with the distance formulation for the prediction of optical depth of lenses is substantial enough to make discrimination between low and high density universe models difficult. But the cosmological constant increases optical depth greatly, and therefore the lensing frequency provides a simple test for the cosmological constant. For a low-redshift system cosmological models can probably be discriminated by the optical depth given large, homogeneous lens samples. An estimate is made of selection effects and corrections to the model in order to predict lensing frequencies for a realistic case. The provisional conclusion is that a very large cosmological constant (e.g. larger than about 0.95 in the flat geometry) is excluded. The effect of gravitational lensing with a cosmological constant on the quasar-galaxy correlation and on fluctuations in the cosmic background radiation is also studied and found to be insignificant.
