On December 10-11, 1987, the Earth and Space Science Division and Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics of the Los Alamos National Laboratory sponsored a workshop on 'The statistical properties of gamma-ray bursts'. The meeting focused on what could be learned about the origin and nature of gamma-ray bursts by statistically analyzing the growing data bases on this phenomenon. For example, how are gamma-ray bursters distributed in space? Is there more than one type of gamma-ray burster? Do the bursts show periodic behavior? and what can be inferred about the nature of gamma-ray bursters from gamma-ray observations and observations in other wavelength bands?
