Solar Activity: Earth Ionosphere

Scientific paper

A statistical estimate of the accuracy of the most popular methods for computing ion composition is obtained on the basis of simultaneous measurements of ion and neutral composition on the AE-C satellite during low solar activity. The error of the computed ion density reaches 50 - 70% at heights of 150 - 190 km, considerably exceeding the experimental error. Recommendations are made on a method of computation that make it possible to reduce this error in ion density to 20% by using direct measurements of neutral composition and to 30% by using MSIS-83 model of neutral composition.
