The authors present a method to determine the density profiles of galaxy groups, based on the study of the average autocorrelation function of galaxy members. They have applied this method to a sample of 42 compact groups from Hickson's catalog. The results show that the distribution of intergalactic separations in Hickson's compact groups is compatible with a unique modified Hubble profile, for which the best fit yields a slope β = 1.4 and a core radius rc = 18 h-1 kpc. Hickson's groups are very compact structures. A lensing analysis shows that three Hickson compact groups are good candidates for strong lensing, if their optical velocity dispersions are not spuriously large due to interlopers.
