Pico de Orizaba (19° N), the tallest mountain in Mexico, has environmental conditions that probably could have occurred in ancient Mars and may also be relevant to the future introduction of life on Mars. Pico de Orizaba has the highest tree line in the world (>4200m). Therefore, our interest to study tree lines at thermal gradients. Since March of 1999 we started to monitor the environmental conditions of the mountain at several sites, above, below and within the tree line of the domineering species P. hartweggi and have been studying the physical and chemical properties of soil as well as those of microbial activity. In particular, soil temperatures at various depths, as well as external temperatures and other measurements such as air humidity, rain events, etc., in addition to tree trunk temperatures, are being recorded hourly since then in an ongoing process to continue for several years. The present is a report of some of the statistical analysis performed on the data, including cross correlations of the resulting time series, in an effort to detect spatial and temporary patterns.
