A technique is examined for statistical analysis of time-dependent data sets obtained with a gravitational detector based on a cylindrical antenna. The concept of a useful signal is introduced, proceeding from the assumption that the detector has a directional diagram. Criteria for determining the probability that a signal is present are given, and a technique is outlined for evaluating the probability that an observed signal is caused by gravitational emission from a source in space.
