Stark-broadening of quasi-degenerate He I lines at 447 and 492 nm has been investigated at low electron densities ranging from Ne = 1 x 10 to the 20th to 3 x 10 to the 21th/cu m. The electron density is determined by accurate laser interferometry with quadrature detection. Calculations have been performed according to the unified theory and the model microfield method. The line-profile measurements are compared with the calculations by a parameterization scheme. The influences of Doppler, ion-dynamical, and instrument broadening are critically discussed. Different line profile parameters are examined in view of their applicability for diagnostic purposes.
