The Stark-broadened profiles of the carbon spectral lines at 4932 A and 5052 A have been measured in a wall-stabilized arc at atmospheric pressure operating in an Ar + CO2 mixture. Temperatures and electron densities were determined from intensity measurements of an oxygen, an argon, and a carbon line of known transition probabilities and using the arc equilibrium and conservation equations. The investigations cover the range of electron densities between 10 to the 22nd and 10 to the 23rd power per cu m and temperatures between 8000 and 12,000 K. Estimated accuracy is about 25% for the widths. The results are compared with recent Griem (1974) calculations and other experiments. They confirm the tendency observed in earlier measurements by Miller and Bengtson (1970); i.e., the agreement between experiment and theory is better for the line at 5052 A than for the line at 4932 A. Sources of errors are discussed.
