We present new results of our ongoing ISO central program on bright galactic nuclei which studies the nature of luminous galaxies and the connection between star formation and AGNs. Spectra of starburst galaxies, ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), taken with the ISO spectrometers SWS, LWS and PHOT-S in the range between 2 um and 200 um, unveil a rich variety of diagnostically important features. Ionic, atomic and molecular emission lines, as well as PAH emission, in combination with model calculations such as photoionization codes and starburst models, provide powerful tools to determine the nature and physical conditions of the energy sources of these types of galaxies and to disentangle the contributions from dust emission, starburst regions and AGNs.
