Gamma ray observations of some starburst galaxies (M81, M82 NGC1068, NGC7469, NGC4736, and NGC3079) with 1 to 5 hrs exposure were conducted with the Whipple 10m gamma ray telescope last year. Starburst galaxies, in which active star formation is undergoing, are relatively new targets for TeV gamma ray astronomy. Although there are not many theoretical studies on starburst galaxies regarding the origin of high energy gamma rays, we anticipate that with the right combination of parameters (such as physical distance to the galaxies, size of the starburst region, magnetic field strength in the region, and so on), some starburst galaxies may be plausible candidates for TeV astronomy. I will present the preliminary results of our observations with Whipple last year. Our new target selection criteria and future observation plan also will be presented.
