A photoelectric micrometer with a multislit grid and a photon counting device has been applied to the reversible transit instrument of Torino Observatory since January 1980. It allows the automatic determination of transit time of stars up to 8.0 visual magnitude.
From the analysis of about 1300 observations of FK4 stars the mean square error of the mean transit time for one observation (reduced to the equator) proved to be ɛτ = ±0.0046s.
The external mean error deduced from 80 group observations from January to October t98t taking into account the residuals between UT1(OAT)and UT1(BIH) is ɛe = ±0.0104s = ± 0".156.
The description of the photoelectric micrometer and the method for deriving the transit time from the photometric data are also given. This photoelectric micrometer is now currently employed for regular observations for the determination of Universal Time with respect to the uniform time scale (UTC) in order to contribute to the studies of Earth's rotation.
