The very-wide-field photographic survey performed during the first Spacelab mission has yielded images at 1680 and 1950 Å of the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a region which has been known for a long time to contain many blue stars. On the basis of UBV photometry, the authors determine the HR diagram of the region and derive the corresponding luminosity function and initial mass function. Theoretical ultraviolet fluxes calculated from this stellar population agree well with the observed fluxes at 1680 and 1950 Å. A good agreement is also found between predicted and observed Hα fluxes. The authors find a relatively flat initial mass function (x = 1) and the value of 30 M_sun; for the upper mass limit.
