The Pan-STARRS project led by the University of Hawaii is building the first of its 1.8-meter wide-field optical telescope systems (called PS1) on the summit of Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui. PS1 will be used for a 3.5-year survey mission, beginning in late 2007. We examine the brown dwarf science that will be enabled by this system through Monte Carlo simulations of the solar neighborhood population, combined with theoretical and empirical expectations of ultracool SEDs. PS1 will provide multi-band optical imaging of the 30,000 sq. degrees north of declination -30 degs, including sensitive photometry in the z-band (0.9 um) and y-band (1.0 um) which are well-suited for identification and characterization of brown dwarfs. The intrinsic multi-epoch character of the PS1 surveys will also provide new capabilities for brown dwarf science through wide-field digital proper motion and parallax measurements, including serendipitous discovery of nearby low-luminosity objects with unanticipated physical properties. In addition to completing the census of the extended solar neighborhood, the large volume probed by PS1 will enable identification of rare classes of ``extreme'' brown dwarfs, including the coolest, youngest, and/or most metal-poor objects.
