A detailed model of the stellar content of the Galaxy is described
briefly. Illustrative applications of the model are made, using existing
data, to indicate how star counts can be used to determine some
parameters of galactic structure, to detect a massive (stellar) halo,
and to constrain models of quasar evolution.
