The objectives and the current status of the STAR CLUSTER experiment, a pilot project for a very large EAS array, are reviewed. The experiment is based on pattern recognition applied to hits registered in large hodoscopes, which are made of tracking chambers above and below a thin layer (2-5 cascade units) of dense material. The advantages of the project in comparison with a conventional scintillator array include a better angular resolution, better background rejection, and better primary energy and mass resolution.
