The kinds of problems that scientists are attempting to solve by the use of stable isotope measurements are summarized with reference to work done in the period 1975 to 1978. Consideration is given to (1) extraterrestrial materials, (2) geothermal studies, (3) organic geochemistry, (4) ore deposits, (5) igneous rocks, (6) metamorphic rocks, (7) paleotemperatures and paleoclimatology.
