A model of the Martian atmosphere consisting of pure carbon dioxide is analyzed. It is shown that the pressure falls to 1 mbar as a result of the gradual freezing out of CO2. A small admixture of noncondensing gases considerably alters the situation. In this case the average atmospheric pressure stabilizes at a level close to 6 mbar. At the end of winter a snow bank forms at the edge of the polar cap. The temperature near the poles falls to 120 K in winter. The air is enriched with the noncondensing components as a result of condensation of carbon dioxide in the polar regions.
