The stability of relativistic shock waves is considered. The conditions for stability derived by A.M. Anile and G. Russo are applied to different physical systems of interest in astrophysics and nuclear physics. There are cases in which unstable shocks may appear. The relation between shock stability and relativistic causality is briefly discussed.
