The stability of the Lagrangian points is examined in the context of barred galaxies, and more generally, of asymmetric gravitational potentials. The stability conditions can be stated by three criteria, each one having a distinct physical meaning, involving the local second derivatives of the potential. A few examples in different bisymmetric potentials are discussed. The L4,5 stability is then investigated in a self-gravitating and self-consistent 3D bar model resulting from an N-body simulation. The points L4,5 of the bar are found to be marginally stable, on the verge of complex instability; other bar patterns rotating slower/faster than the actual bar would make these points stable/complex-unstable.
