Taking into account the effect of ion-neutral drag, the stability of the sunlit cometary ionopause is rediscussed. We relate our analysis to the spacecraft findings of P/Halley and then assume that the density of the cometary plasma varies asr -1. For simplicity, we also assume that the plasma is approximately incompressible and the plasma velocity has only a finite, albeit constant, radial component. On these assumptions, we derive the dispersion equation which allows an analytic solution.
