The stability of the sunlit cometary ionopause is examined by incorporating the effect of ion-neutral drag into a model of the ionopause. The concept of a tangential discontinuity is defined for the problem in which the radial component is emphasized. The fundamental equations of stability are developed, and the boundary conditions are set forth with the dispersion equation. The expressions for the cometary ionopause demonstrate that stability arises only when the equilibrium velocity is very small. This is compared to observational data from the Comet P/Halley, and the relation is found to be the same as that derived analytically. The analytical conclusion is restricted, however, because: (1) the plasma is assumed to have a constant velocity; (2) the stabilizing effect of the magnetic field is not considered; and (3) sources, curvature, and compressibility are not incorporated into the analysis.
