Stability conditions are obtained for the tangential discontinuity separating two compressible infinitely conducting gases (or an infinitely conducting gas from a nonconducting one). It is shown that the stability increases with the growth of the relative velocity of the gases and of the magnetic field strength in the direction of this velocity. It is noted that the results can be applied to cosmic-plasma physics, especially to the development of models for the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere and other planets.
