It is shown that the Zel'dovich-Novikov (1971) stability criterion for cold stars is valid for relativistic configurations. The method for determining this stability is based on the comparison of the internal structure of configurations with similar values of the pressure at the center. Some illustrations of the stability criterion are presented; particular attention is given to solutions corresponding to baryon configurations.
