Twilight measurements made at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory are examined, and Salyut-6 observations of the optical structure of the sunset are analyzed. These data disclose the existence of sporadic mesoscale variations of stratospheric aerosol, including rapid processes of stratospheric 'self-cleaning' which is long-lasting. The short-term disappearance of stratospheric aerosol during stratospheric winter warmings is also disclosed.
