The effect of spontaneous symmetry breaking by a gravitational field in homogeneous isotropic cosmological models is investigated within the framework of the Poincare gauge theory of gravity. In the present theory, the gravitational Lagrangian includes both the Einsteinian term (the curvature scalar) and the quadratic terms in the curvature and torsion tensors. The method is shown to permit the construction of cosmological models that are regular in metric and torsion.
