c2d Legacy observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope of isolated dense cores have revealed a population ( ˜ 15) of candidate Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs), i.e., very low mass protostars or proto-brown-dwarfs. The first example is the deeply embedded VeLLO L1014-IRS, with a luminosity of only ˜ 0.09 L&sun; which drives a very weak and compact molecular outflow. We report on our progress in establishing which of the other candidate VeLLOs are true low luminosity objects (and not background objects), and we discuss their properties and host cores. We also report on our program to extract similar objects from the c2d large nearby molecular cloud observations.
Support for this work, part of the Spitzer Legacy Science Program, was provided by NASA through contracts 1224608 and 1230782 issued by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under NASA contract 1407. Support from NASA Origins Grants NAG5-13050 (P.C.M.) and NNG04GG24G (N.J.E & M.M.D.) is also acknowledged.
