Barred Spirals: Structure

Central bars in galaxies are commonly associated with grand design spiral structure, in which the arms are long, symmetric and continuous. However, many barred spirals have flocculent structure. A decade ago, Kormendy and Norman showed that neighbors also play a key role in stimulating grand design structure. This paper reviews the properties of different types of bars and addresses environmental factors that influence arm structure in spiral galaxies.
