We perform three-dimensional numerical simulations of an accretion disc in a close binary system, using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method and a polytropic equation of state. Our results show that the computed accretion disc exhibits spiral shaped shocks for various mass ratios of the binary. Spiral shocks having been observed in the dwarf nova IP Pegasi by means of the Doppler tomography technique, we compare Doppler maps computed from our numerical simulations with the observed one in IP Pegasi, and find a good agreement between the two.
