A time-dependent variational Ansatz is presented and used to display the transition from instanton-dominated quantum-mechanical tunneling between vacua to the thermal-dominated Boltzmann transition over the sphaleron barrier. It is found that the transition probability is given by the Boltzmann form down to a temperature below which there is a sudden transition to the rate dictated by the SU(2) instanton. The role of the quartic Higgs boson coupling in the determination of the availability of a temperature gap for tunneling is discussed.
