Photometry: Infrared, Radial Velocities, Spectroscopy

Scientific paper

We have obtained spectra of 85 giants selected from IR photometry in the fields of several very reddened galactic clusters. Radial velocities are measured to check membership. We measure the strength of several Fe and Mg spectral feature s, presenting a new calibration of metallicity based on the location of the giants in the Mg+Fe5270+Fe5335 vs (J-K)0 diagram. Using this calibration we compute accurate mean metallicities for the clusters studied. Reddening values which better fit the spectroscopic and photometric data are also derived. Pal 6 turns out to be the most metal rich cluster of our sample, with [Fe/H]=0.2+/-0.3. (1 data file).
