Cataclysmic Variables
Scientific paper
Almost half of the objects in the CV catalog of Downes & Shara (PASP, 105, 127, 1993) do not have published spectra, which can leave their classification as CVs in doubt. In this paper, we present spectra of 15 objects for which no spectra are known or which have been little studied. Eight of the objects are clearly CVs, four are questionable CV candidates, and the remaining three are clearly not CVs. Two objects, V747 Cyg and V75 1 Cyg, show evidence of a composite spectrum, while our spectra of HL Aqr show significant variability on a time scale of years, and our spectra of Q Cyg show variability on a time scale of days. If our "success" rate in finding CVs from unstudied objects is typical, then there are over 100 objects in the Downes and Shara catalog which are misidentified or spurious objects.
