On 13 grating spectrograms of Nova Vul with 165-A/mm dispersion taken Nov. 4-Dec. 27, 1976, about 350 absorption and emission lines have been identified and their intensities measured. The time variations of the profiles are traced. For the strongest lines, envelope expansion velocities are determined from both the shift of the absorption component and the halfwidth of the emission component. The principal spectrum was replaced by the diffuse-enhanced spectrum November 16, the Orion spectrum predominated from November 25, and the nebular-spectrum line emerged about December 6, although a year passed before the main nebular spectrum became established in October 1977. On the whole Nova Vul 1976 was a typical medium-speed nova and can be described by the Baade or Boyarchuk-Gershberg model (1977), with a more complex main envelope and several subsidiary envelopes.
