Spectroscopic observations of MV Lyr, a possible AM Her star, are reported. The spectrum varies with time: rather strong emission lines will appear, only to vanish completely with the spectrum becoming a pure continuum. The emission-line profiles fluctuate rapidly on time scales shorter than 1 min, inducing large, irregular variations in the measured radial velocity. The form of the Balmer decrement depends significantly on the emission-line intensities. Hydrogen absorption lines presumably belonging to a white dwarf component have been detected. The observations are most simply explained by accepting that MV Lyr is a close binary system.
