We propose to use STIS to take images and diagnostic spectra in the 2900-10250 A range of rapidly-evolving hot spots and other shock features in the equatorial ring {ER} surrounding SN 1987A. A combination of aperture positions through the low and high resolution gratings will provide resolved data on all known and any new hot spots in all optical emission lines.
