With the recent improvements to its surface accuracy, the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is the most sensitive telescope currently operating at 90 GHz. Plans are underway to provide spectroscopic capabilities with the GBT over a significant fraction the 3mm atmospheric window ( 67 -- 116 GHz). The 3mm window is exceptionally rich in molecular lines that trace the physical properties and chemistry out of which stars and galaxies form. We highlight several of the science opportunities that would be enabled by a 3 mm spectroscopic instrument on the GBT. We discuss the status of our development plans and summarize the expected performance of the GBT at 3 mm. The weather statistics over the last decade suggest that more than 1000 hours a year are suitable for 3mm observations at the Green Bank site.
