Thirty-seven spectrograms of the approximately 9th magnitude Be star HDE 245770, apparently the only likely candidate star for the transient X-ray source A0535+26, are analyzed which were obtained over some 500 days at dispersions of 20 to 60 A/mm. Radial velocities are derived by a cross-correlation technique, measurement errors are estimated, and a search for periodicity is conducted. An inclination of at least 50 deg is suggested, a distance of 1.3 kpc is adopted, and the presence of an unidentified absorption line at 4726 A is noted. Variability in the absorption-line spectrum is discussed, and possible periods are obtained from the absorption velocities, H-beta velocities, He II 4686-A and H-beta line intensities, known times of high X-ray luminosity, and pulse-timing data. Best-fit solutions are found at periods of 94, 48, and 28 days; an upper limit of 19 km/s is placed on the radial-velocity variations. An upper limit of about 3 solar masses is placed on the mass function.
