Optical spectrophotometry has been obtained for 141 Kiso ultraviolet excess galaxies, mostly of "compact" morphology. In addition, 44 objects have been imaged in B, R, and I colors. The dominant charcteristic of the sample is a moderate to strong starburst activity (spectra of thermally photoionized interstellar gas), often coupled with radiative shocks which could trace violent dynamical events (close encounters, collisions, mergings). Only three objects appear as faint AGN candidates. The photometry reveals a large variance in the true morphology, with every possible combinations of standard surface brightness distributions (r1/4 and exponential laws). Some fresh mergers are suspected. A provisional calibration of the "uv-excess" in the Kiso catalogue is given in terms of B-R color. The significance of the "compact" morphology is briefly discussed.
