Measurements of the spectral properties of noctilucent clouds and the upper atmosphere are presented which were performed aboard the Salyut 4 space station with the high-speed MSS-2 spectrometer in the wavelength range from 0.4 to 0.8 micron. The spectrometer and measurement technique are described. Analysis of the results obtained shows that the spectral intensity of noctilucent clouds is characterized by two maxima, one in the blue region at 0.43-0.46 micron and the other in the red at 0.74 micron, that the spectral intensity is significantly higher in the blue than in the red, and that the cloud spectrum contains absorption bands due to atmospheric O2, O3, and H2O.
