Spectroscopic observations of AM Her are used to determine the orbital velocity of the secondary star. We describe how the radial velocities and flux deficits derived from the NaI doublet around 8190A can be used to map the NaI surface distribution and hence give an estimate of K_2, corrected for the effects of irradiation. The resulting surface maps are consistent with the accretion geometry proposed by Cropper and, from the `quality' of the fit, suggest an inclination of 50 deg or more, higher than that normally quoted.
