It is demonstrated that the H-alpha Bochum event is a rather general spectroscopic fine-structure event in SN 1987A around day 20. The event is also evident in H-beta, H-gamma, and H-delta, and to some degree in Na I-D and Ca II. The H-beta and H-gamma profiles do not disappear between roughly days 50 and 70 because of line blends, but rather are transiently filled up by intrinsic fine structure. The radial velocity of the observed fine structure in H-alpha and H-beta evolves similarly with time. An increase of the excitation and ionization degree of the material closely above the photosphere is the most likely mechanism for the observed fine structure. It is proposed that this increase is due to the pervasion of radioactively heated material through the photosphere around day 20. The H-alpha Bochum event then would be the earliest spectroscopic evidence for the existence and activity of shock-generated Co-56 and its mixup in SN 1987A.
