This paper describes the behavior of a highly peculiar object, still very poorly known. The object, named AE 1, varies in brightness (13 m to 17 m) in a rather complex way. The variations in radial velocity are very large (+180 km/s to -180 km/s). Spectra of AE 1 consist almost exclusively of He I absorption lines, strongly broadened. The line intensity is variable. Different star models, that could explain the complex behavior of this object, are discussed.
