Observations of comet P/Austin and P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 1982 with the intensified Reticon spectropolarimeter at the 0.9 m telescope of the Pine Bluff Observatory allowed, unlike broadband polarimetry, a determination of continuum polarization without molecular line contamination. A dual-detector system allowed simultaneous measurements from 5000 to 8000 A over phase angles ranging from 50 to 125 degrees for comet Austin and 10 to 40 degrees for comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Both comet Austin and comet CG had an increasing continuum flux near perihelion, and albedo color dependence was neutral to within 30 percent for comet Austin, and to within 5 percent for comet CG. The polarization of the comets, either perpendicular or parallel to the scattering plane, was found to be insensitive to the dust production rate and to comet differences reflected by gas content because of a continuous polarization versus phase angle curve for gassy comet Austin and dusty comet CG. Negative polarization, suspected in comet Austin and confirmed in comet CG, is found to resemble the curves characteristic of asteroids.
